Hardhats

Many VistA professionals informally banded together as the “Hardhats” (a name the original VistA programmers used for themselves) to promote that the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) release of VA VistA be standardized for universal usage.

WorldVistA

In March 2003 a non-profit organization, WorldVistA, was established to extend and collaboratively improve the VistA electronic health record and health information system for use outside of its original setting. It is an organization independent of the VA system. It maintains as an objective that its public version be compatible (interoperable) with the VA’s official version.
